Oct. 3 People of Color retreat with Gaylon Ferguson & Mushim

Opening the Door of Liberation: A one-day meditation retreat for People of Color With Acharya Gaylon Ferguson and Mushim Ikeda-Nash

This one day retreat will include sitting and walking or movement meditation with instruction provided, as well as community building through personal sharing and discussion in a safe and welcoming meditative environment. Buddhist teachings of liberation from dissatisfaction and suffering are the basis for the day’s guidance, as well as teachings that point to our potential for joy and ease in everyday life.

Open to self-identified people of color at all levels of meditation experience, including beginners. People of color of all ages, genders, sexual orientations, and cultures are welcomed. This event is wheelchair accessible.

A gentle reminder: Please do not wear fragranced products (including “natural” fragrances) or clothes laundered with fragranced products to BSC, to protect the health of community members with environmental illnesses.  


Acharya Gaylon Ferguson is a senior teacher in the lineage of Shambhala Buddhism and author of the new book Natural Wakefulness, Discovering the Wisdom We Were Born With. He has led meditation retreats for 30 years. He is currently a professor at Naropa University and also taught cultural anthropology at Stanford University and the University of Washington. His article, “Making Friends with Ourselves,” was selected for inclusion in The Best Buddhist Writing 2005.

Mushim (Patricia) Ikeda-Nash is a Buddhist teacher, mother, writer, and diversity facilitator who teaches retreats for people of color and social justice activists nationally. Known for her warm and down-to-earth teaching style, Mushim is a core teacher, Center Coordinator and  Leadership Sangha member of the East Bay Meditation Center, in Oakland  www.eastbaymeditation.org  She is one of three women portrayed in the documentary film, Acting on Faith: Women’s New Religious Activism in America. http://mushim.wordpress.com/

Cost: Sliding Scale/Generosity Policy
You are invited to choose your own level of voluntary donations (the practice of “Dana,” or Generosity) to help support the Berkeley Shambhala Center and the teachers. $75 – $10 recommended for the Center’s costs; no one turned away for lack of funds. We’d rather have you here than not! At the event, please support these precious teachings by offering an additional monetary gift to be shared by Gaylon & Mushim.
